Day 13 – A Change of Name

Scripture: Genesis 35:1-15
Suggested Song: All I Have Is Christ

Preparation for devotional:
We now move on in the story of Jacob and his family. They have settled in, in their new land. However, Jacobs sons, to protect their sister, have picked a fight between their family and the families who live in the new land. So, Jacob is scared for his family. Jacob goes to “bethel”, which means “the place where I meet God”. He builds an altar there and waits for God to give him favor. Not only does God give him favor, but He changes his name from Jacob to Israel, which means “to walk with God”. God also gives jacob the same blessing and promise that He had given his father Isaac. That he would be the father of many nations and that from his own blood would come kings and eventually the King of Kings. We all need this change in our lives, where we go from living for ourselves to living for God and walking with Him.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Before Jacob went to meet God what did he command his family to do?
  2. What was the first command that God gave to Jacob after He changed his name?
  3. Where have we heard this command before?

Pray that we would be people who would walk with God.
